After her studies in criminology (2012), Helene became a prison researcher at the Leuven Institute of Criminology (KU Leuven, Belgium). Her doctoral research focused on the normalization principle in Belgian and Norwegian prisons. By spending a great deal of time in these prisons, not only her academic interest grew, but also her motivation to change the prison system. That is why she supported the launch of RESCALED in 2019 and became European coordinator of this European movement for detention houses.

The RESCALED Research Community is an initiative of RESCALED, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and KRUS (University College of Norwegian Correctional Service) with the aim to contribute to and share excellent interdisciplinary and comparative research on small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated forms of incarceration.
